Tuaran is an easy drive north of Kota Kinabalu, yet it feels like another pace of life. This is the land of my childhood: the river, the padi fields, the Sunday market and the smell of Tuaran mee frying in a hot wok.

In short: the best things to do in Tuaran are eating Tuaran mee in town, crossing the Tamparuli suspension bridge, shopping at the Sunday tamu, learning about Lotud culture at Linangkit Cultural Village, visiting the new Hakka Mini Museum, and slowing down beside the padi fields and Mengkabong river. Most of it fits into one or two easy days.

1. Eat Tuaran Mee Where It Was Born

Tuaran mee is the dish this town is known for: fried egg noodles, usually served with greens, egg and meat. You will find it in the coffee shops around town, usually best in the morning. Read more in my Tuaran mee story.

2. Walk Across the Tamparuli Suspension Bridge

The colourful Tamparuli Suspension Bridge crosses the river in Tamparuli town, in Tuaran district. Beside it stands the old low bridge, made famous by the folk song Jambatan Tamparuli. There is no charge to cross, and volunteers sometimes perform traditional dances at the start of the bridge; a small tip is welcome (Sabah Tourism Board).

  • Tamparuli has its own tamu on Wednesday mornings (and a smaller one on Tuesdays, per the Sabah Tourism Board list), right beside the bridge.

3. Shop the Tuaran Sunday Tamu

A tamu is Sabah's traditional open market, where villagers bring vegetables, fish, fruit, kuih and handmade goods. Tuaran's tamu is held every Sunday morning (Sabah Tourism Board). Go early, before 9am, for the best produce, and bring cash, since most stalls do not take cards.

4. Visit the New Hakka Mini Museum

Tuaran has something new this October. On 9 October 2026, the Tuaran District Hakka Association opened its new building and a Hakka Mini Museum in Tuaran, at a ceremony where the Chief Minister's speech was delivered on his behalf by Assistant Minister Datuk Ceasar Mandela Malakun (Our Sabah Today; Daily Express).

The museum aims to preserve Hakka history and culture in Sabah, including recordings of the Hakka language, the history and costumes of the unicorn dance, and heritage recipes with the stories behind them. The Hakka community's arrival in Sabah dates back to 1883.

  • Before you go: the museum's exact address, opening hours and entry fee have not been published yet. Please check with the Tuaran District Hakka Association before visiting.

5. Discover Lotud Culture at Linangkit Cultural Village

Linangkit Cultural Village in Tuaran shares the culture of the Lotud people, one of the Dusun communities of Tuaran, with a longhouse, traditional food, music and dances (MySabah). It is close to my heart, as I wrote in The Spirit of Tuaran.

  • Contact the village a few hours ahead to arrange a guided tour, food or a cultural show. Published opening hours and fees differ between sources, so confirm before you go.

6. Wander Tuaran Town and the Clock Tower

Tuaran town is small enough to explore on foot: old shophouses, coffee shops and the clock tower at the roundabout. Read the story behind it in my Tuaran clock tower post.

7. Slow Down by the Padi Fields and Mengkabong River

Tuaran is still padi country. Drive the quiet roads outside town and you will see green or golden fields, depending on the season, and buffalo resting in the mud. Toward the coast, the Mengkabong river meets the sea near the Gayang (Mengkabong) bridge, a lovely spot for an evening view. These are the landscapes I grew up with, and they appear in The Broken Bridge.

8. Join the Karnival Tamu Belia Tuaran 3.0 (28 Oct to 1 Nov 2026)

If you are in Tuaran at the end of October, the Karnival Tamu Belia Tuaran 3.0 runs from 28 October to 1 November 2026 at Padang Istiadat Daerah Tuaran. It is organised by the Tuaran Youth Town Club with the Tuaran District Office and government agencies, with sports, cultural performances, busking, a car show, Jualan Rahmah stalls, a car boot sale and lucky draws (Sabah News).

Where to Stay: Tuaran Kampung Villa

Tuaran Kampung Villa (TKV), Your Private Home in the Heart of Tuaran. TKV sleeps up to 8 guests, so it suits families and small groups who want to wake up in the kampung, eat Tuaran mee for breakfast and explore at their own pace. Read how the villa came to be.

Don't just visit Tuaran. Live it. Taste it. Come Home.
